In response to the water scarcity brought about by the El Niño phenomenon, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Iloilo is proactively seeking alternative water sources. Senior Fire Officer 3 (SFO3) Romelo Aguilar emphasized the critical nature of this search during an emergency meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC). Aguilar pointed out that the scarcity of water not only affects daily utility needs but poses a significant challenge during fire incidents when a substantial water supply is crucial. He highlighted that the primary water source during firefighting operations is typically the fire hydrant, but Iloilo lacks hydrants with the necessary capacity.
This shortage is particularly concerning in the fifth district of Iloilo, which heavily relies on water drilling due to the depletion of mainstream natural sources. Aguilar mentioned the plan to collaborate with local government units (LGUs) and water districts to effectively address this water shortage issue.
Meanwhile, Iloilo Board Member Rolando Distura has raised these concerns in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, emphasizing improved water sources for fire hydrants. These efforts underscore the importance of proactive measures and collaboration in ensuring effective disaster response despite challenges like water scarcity.
