In a recent space cooperation conference organized by the Stratbase Institute, Philippine government officials and experts underscored the critical role of satellites and space-based technologies in bolstering the country’s security measures and disaster mitigation capabilities. Commodore Roy Vincent Trinidad of the Philippine Navy highlighted the effectiveness of Canada’s Dark Vessel Detection System in safeguarding maritime domains by tracking ships engaged in illegal activities, even when they attempt to avoid surveillance by turning off location transmitting devices.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Executive Director Ariel Nepomuceno emphasized the significance of satellite-based solutions in enhancing disaster management capabilities, noting their vital role in adopting digital solutions for a more comprehensive approach to managing disasters across various government agencies.
Additionally, Environment Undersecretary Carlos Primo David discussed using satellite technology to map out the Philippines’ natural resources, citing its cost-effectiveness and efficiency in covering vast areas that would otherwise be impractical to map manually. This mapping effort is seen as a crucial step towards progress and economic development, leveraging the insights gained from satellite imagery.
Stratbase Institute President Dindo Manhit urged the Philippine government to pursue more partnerships in the space technology sector, recognizing its vast potential for new industries, collaboration with other countries, and economic benefits for Philippine society. He emphasized the need to view space technology as a risk mitigation tool and a source of opportunities and growth for the country.
