Makati City and Japanese NGO Collaborate on Risk-Reduction Project

The local government of Makati City has joined forces with a Japanese non-governmental organization (NGO) for a comprehensive two-day training on creative disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies.

The aim of the DRR Education Program Development Training was to craft customized learning materials specifically tailored to the city’s unique disaster risk profile.

The partnership with Plus Arts NPO brought innovative approaches to advocating for DRR through engaging and interactive educational activities, primarily focusing on elementary and high school students.

This initiative will play a crucial role in designing and implementing captivating learning programs and materials to increase awareness and bolster the disaster preparedness of students in Makati City.

The training participants included officials from the Department of Education-Makati (DepEd-Makati), school principals, DRRM coordinators, and art and science teachers from public elementary and high schools within the city. Representatives from the University of Makati (UMak) also actively participated in the program.

The insights and recommendations gathered from Makati City Mayor Abby Binay and all participants will be instrumental in shaping educational materials that foster resilience as an integral aspect of everyday life in the city.

This collaborative effort follows Makati City’s recent recognition by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). The city received the highest rating, “Beyond Compliant,” in the agency’s nationwide assessment of local disaster risk reduction and management councils and offices.

The successful partnership between Makati City and Arts NPO underscores the city’s unwavering commitment to innovative and proactive disaster risk reduction initiatives, paving the way for a more resilient and prepared community.
