Climate-Proofing Education in the Philippines

Manila, Philippines – The Philippines’ extreme vulnerability to climate change is putting the education of millions of children at risk. With typhoons and heatwaves already causing significant disruptions, leading to the loss of up to 26 school days annually, UNICEF is urging the nation to take immediate action.

UNICEF is calling for two key actions:

  1. Implement Climate-Smart Education: This approach will ensure learning can continue even during extreme weather events, while also empowering students with the knowledge and skills to address climate change.
  2. Enhance Data Collection: Improved data on disaster preparedness and the impact of climate change on children will enable more effective policies and resource allocation to protect vulnerable populations.

This urgent call to action underscores the critical intersection of education, climate change, and children’s rights. UNICEF emphasizes the need for comprehensive strategies to safeguard the futures of children in climate-vulnerable regions like the Philippines.
