The Philippines is accelerating its transition to a green economy through the Green Economy Programme in the Philippines (GEPP), a P3.67-billion initiative launched in March 2024. This program, spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in partnership with the European Union (EU), aims to enhance waste management and promote a circular economy by reducing waste and optimizing resource use.
Running until 2028, the GEPP focuses on four key areas:
- Policy Development and Collaboration – Establishing a multi-sectoral platform to align government, private sector, and community efforts.
- Local Government and Community Involvement – Empowering cities and municipalities to adopt sustainable practices.
- Private Sector and Green Financing – Encouraging businesses to integrate eco-friendly operations and explore green investment opportunities.
- Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency – Expanding the use of clean energy sources and improving energy efficiency across industries.
Pilot projects are already underway in various locations, including Baguio City, Caloocan City, Quezon City, Pasig City, Puerto Princesa City, Metro Manila, Ormoc City, Davao City, the Island Garden City of Samal, and Siargao Islands.
EU Ambassador Luc Véron emphasized that the GEPP aligns with the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, reinforcing the commitment to climate action and inclusive economic growth. The program aims to build a more sustainable and resilient future for the Philippines by fostering collaboration between the government, private sector, and communities
