On Earth Day 2025, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) called for a nationwide shift to renewable energy, highlighting its critical role in combating climate change and securing the Philippines’ future.
Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga emphasized the need for a unified, multi-sectoral approach to harness the country’s natural resources, such as solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal energy, responsibly and sustainably. The transition to renewables is seen as a path to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthen resilience to climate-related disasters, and promote inclusive economic development.
Loyzaga also underscored the importance of a just transition, ensuring that all communities benefit and that ecosystems are protected. This includes careful management of critical minerals like nickel and cobalt, vital for renewable energy technologies.
Aligning with the Earth Day 2025 theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” the DENR’s message reinforces that Filipinos play a central role in building a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
