As Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island erupted early Tuesday, April 8, 2025, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) maintained Alert Level 3, signaling ongoing volcanic unrest and the threat of more hazardous eruptions. Authorities are strongly focusing on resident safety, urging communities in high-risk areas to act swiftly and follow evacuation protocols.

Evacuation Urged Within Permanent Danger Zone

Phivolcs has reiterated the call for residents within the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) to evacuate immediately. The risk of pyroclastic flows, lava collapse, and ashfall remains high. Local government units (LGUs), in coordination with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), are facilitating evacuations and ensuring displaced individuals are brought to safety.

Safe Shelters and Relocation Areas

Evacuation centers have been set up in multiple locations to house residents fleeing from danger zones. In Bago City, Negros Occidental, a resettlement area featuring upgraded “bahay kubo”-style shelters is ready to accommodate evacuees, offering a more secure and humane alternative to cramped emergency shelters.

Preparing for a Possible Escalation to Alert Level 4

If volcanic activity intensifies and Alert Level 4 is declared—indicating an imminent hazardous eruption—the danger zone may be expanded to a 10-kilometer radius. Around 124,000 residents could be affected. To address this, the OCD has developed “Plan Exodus,” a large-scale evacuation plan prepared to mobilize residents quickly and efficiently.

Safety Reminders for Residents

To ensure safety and minimize risks, residents are strongly advised to:

  • Stay Alert: Follow Phivolcs and local government updates for the latest advisories and warnings.
  • Follow Evacuation Orders: Do not delay when asked to evacuate. Quick action can save lives.
  • Prepare a Go-Bag: Include essentials like food, water, medicines, flashlights, face masks, and important documents.
  • Keep Away from Danger Zones: Avoid the PDZ and other restricted areas to prevent accidents and exposure to volcanic hazards.

With the volcano’s activity showing no signs of stopping, the cooperation of the public is essential. Authorities emphasize that preparedness, calm, and quick response are key to ensuring everyone’s safety as the situation develops.
