As the summer season intensifies, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned that the heat index in parts of the country will reach dangerous levels on April 7, 2025. Forecasts show that Virac, Catanduanes may experience a heat index of 43°C, while Dagupan City in Pangasinan and Dumangas, Iloilo could reach 42°C. These conditions can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke.

To help you stay cool and safe, here are some practical tips:

1. Stay Hydrated

Drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol, which can dehydrate you. You can also take fluids with electrolytes, such as sports drinks or fresh juices.

2. Avoid the Sun at Peak Hours

Limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is at its hottest. If you must go outside, stay in the shade or use an umbrella.

3. Wear Light and Comfortable Clothing

Opt for loose-fitting, light-colored clothes made of breathable fabric. Don’t forget your hat or cap, and wear sunglasses and sunscreen to protect your skin.

4. Seek Cooler Spaces

Stay indoors in well-ventilated or air-conditioned areas. If your home doesn’t have cooling, spend time in public places like malls or community centers.

5. Watch Over Vulnerable Groups

Check on children, the elderly, and people with health conditions, as they are more vulnerable to heat. Make sure they are staying cool and drinking enough water.

6. Protect Your Pets

Ensure pets have plenty of water and shade. Avoid walking them on hot surfaces that could burn their paws.

7. Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Watch for symptoms like dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea, or confusion. If you or someone around you experiences these, move to a cooler area and hydrate immediately.

By following these simple steps, you can reduce the risks of extreme heat and keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Stay updated with the latest advisories from PAGASA and local authorities.
