Flooding in Maguindanao del Sur Displaces Nearly 200,000: Communities Reeling from Lingering Impact

Davao City, May 20, 2025 — Massive flooding triggered by days of torrential rain has displaced over 192,000 residents in Maguindanao del Sur, the NDRRMC reported Monday, May 19. At least 47 barangays across 11 towns are submerged, with Mamasapano logging the highest number of affected residents at 34,700.

Eight of Mamasapano’s 14 barangays have been underwater for five days, leaving homes, farms, and public services severely disrupted.

The Geography of Vulnerability

Most affected areas lie on the edge of the Ligawasan Marsh, a vast wetland that collects runoff from Bukidnon and Sultan Kudarat. Officials cite silt build-up in the marsh and its tributaries as a key factor behind the worsening floods.

Warning of More to Come

PAGASA has issued flood alerts across BARMM, warning of more rains due to a low-pressure area. Areas at risk include parts of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, and Basilan. River systems in Parang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, and Malabang are under close watch for flash floods.

Residents in low-lying and mountainous areas are advised to remain alert and follow local disaster protocols.

Long-Term Impact and the Call for Action

The floods have halted livelihoods, displaced thousands, and strained access to food, water, and health services. Relief operations are underway, but many evacuation centers are nearing capacity.

“This is more than just a weather event—it’s a chronic crisis,” said a local volunteer. “We need long-term solutions for environmental restoration and disaster resilience.”

As rains continue, affected communities face prolonged uncertainty, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable flood management and coordinated response.
