A magnitude 4.6 earthquake shook the municipality of Sarangani in Davao Occidental early Thursday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The tectonic quake struck at 5:36 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers and was centered off Sarangani Island. While the tremor is not expected to cause damage or trigger aftershocks, it occurred just three days after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the same area on Monday evening.

In light of recent seismic activity, authorities are reminding the public to remain vigilant and follow basic earthquake safety procedures.

What to Do During an Earthquake

If indoors:

  • DROP to the ground, COVER yourself by getting under a sturdy table or desk, and HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
  • Stay away from windows, glass, mirrors, or anything that could shatter.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • If in bed, stay there and protect your head with a pillow.

If outdoors:

  • Move to an open area away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.
  • Drop to the ground and stay in place until the shaking stops.

If driving:

  • Pull over to a safe spot and stop. Avoid overpasses, bridges, and power lines.
  • Remain in the vehicle until the shaking ceases.

After the shaking stops:

  • Check yourself and others for injuries.
  • Inspect your surroundings for structural damage or hazards such as gas leaks or electrical sparks.
  • Be prepared for aftershocks. These can be strong and may occur minutes, hours, or even days after the main quake.
