The Climate Change Commission (CCC) highlights the critical role of nature-based solutions (NbS) in disaster risk prevention, reduction, and management. The goal is to prepare for extreme weather events caused by climate change and develop a country that can withstand its effects.
Secretary Robert E.A. Borje, vice chairperson and executive director of the CCC, underscored the effectiveness of NbS and the ridge-to-reef approach in handling climate risks and adapting to disasters. These approaches strengthen the livelihoods of coastal communities, ensure food security, and protect
vulnerable populations, promoting a sustainable and resilient future for future generations.
This step creates long-term benefits for future generations and addresses urgent planetary concerns. NbS and the ridge-to-reef approach are indispensable for addressing ecological challenges such as climate change, disasters, food security, and resiliency. These strategies are integrated into the Philippine National Adaptation Plan and the draft National Determined Contribution Implementation Plan and aligned with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change guidelines, ensuring global impact.
Protected and restored coral reefs, safeguarded peatlands, and regrown and restored forests are critical components of NbS and the ridge-to-reef approach. These actions sustainably manage and restore ecosystems, addressing global environmental concerns. The commitment to implementing various disaster risk prevention, reduction, and management strategies through approaches like NbS and the ridge-to-reef strategy aims to enhance the resilience and preparedness of the country.
