On Sunday, a phreatic eruption occurred at Mayon Volcano, generating a loud boom, rockfall, pyroclastic density currents, and a 1,200-meter ash plume. While no direct damage has been reported, authorities emphasize resident safety and preparedness.

The Albay governor has prohibited all activities within the permanent danger zone due to the ongoing threat of further phreatic eruptions, rock falls, wall collapse, and pyroclastic density currents. Residents are advised to wear face masks or damp cloths over their nose and mouth in case of ash fall.

Aviation authorities have been warned to advise pilots to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit. To ensure preparedness for potential needs, the Department of Social Welfare and Development has prepositioned food packs and non-food relief items. The Office of Civil Defense is closely monitoring the situation and actively coordinating with local government units. Phivolcs reiterates that phreatic eruptions can occur suddenly and without warning, urging residents to remain vigilant and heed the instructions of local authorities.
