ILOILO CITY — In response to the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on May 13, authorities are urging residents in Western Visayas, particularly those in Iloilo, to remain vigilant and prioritize safety amid ongoing volcanic activity.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised Kanlaon Volcano to Alert Level 3, indicating magmatic unrest and the potential for more hazardous eruptions. The eruption produced a 4.5-kilometer-high ash plume and rumbling sounds heard as far as La Castellana and Canlaon City. Ashfall was reported in several communities in Negros Occidental.

While Iloilo is not in the direct impact zone, ashfall and air quality risks remain possible, especially if wind direction shifts. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VI has activated emergency protocols and is closely coordinating with local governments to support affected communities. Over 81,000 Family Food Packs are on standby in Bacolod and nearby areas, ready for immediate deployment.

How Iloilo Residents Can Stay Safe:

  • Stay indoors during ashfall and keep windows and doors closed.
  • Wear N95 masks or use a damp cloth to cover your nose and mouth when going outside.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially for the elderly, children, and those with respiratory illnesses.
  • Store clean water and food, and prepare emergency supplies in case of sudden escalation.
  • Follow official PHIVOLCS, DSWD, and your Local Government Unit (LGU) advisories.
  • Keep communication lines open and ensure mobile devices are charged for emergency alerts.

DSWD Western Visayas also assures the public that mobile kitchens, water treatment units, and trained Quick Response Teams are ready to serve internally displaced persons (IDPs) if the situation worsens.
