As millions of students across the country return to school on Monday, June 16, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a weather advisory warning of rain showers and thunderstorms brought about by two prevailing weather systems.

According to PAGASA, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will affect Mindanao, while easterly winds will influence the Visayas and the eastern section of Luzon. The forecast is as follows:

  • Mindanao: Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
  • Visayas, Bicol Region, and Quezon: Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.
  • Cagayan Valley and Aurora: Partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
  • Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon: Generally, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon or evening due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA has also advised the public to be cautious of potential flash floods and landslides, especially in areas expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

🚸 Tips for a Resilient and Safe School Start

Given the weather outlook, here are important resilience tips for parents and students to ensure safety, comfort, and preparedness as the new school year begins:

🧑‍🏫 For Parents:

  1. Stay Informed Daily
Start each day by checking reliable weather updates from PAGASA or local government pages. This allows you to prepare your child accordingly.
  2. Pack Smart: Rain Gear is a Must
Include a compact umbrella, raincoat, waterproof bag cover, and even a small towel in your child’s bag. Extra socks or slippers can also be a lifesaver.
  3. Plan for Floods and Delays
Map out the safest route to school and identify any flood-prone areas to avoid. Have contingency plans for pickup or delays.
  4. Emergency Contact Ready
Make sure your child knows who to contact in an emergency. Place an ID or contact card inside their bag with updated numbers.
  5. Discuss Weather Awareness at Home
Teach children not to wade in floodwaters, avoid areas with electrical hazards, and to seek shelter immediately during thunderstorms.

🎒 For Students:

  1. Be Prepared, Rain or Shine
The weather can change quickly—always carry rain protection even if skies are clear when you leave home.
  2. Protect Your School Essentials
Use resealable plastic bags for notebooks, gadgets, and important schoolwork to avoid water damage.
  3. Know What to Do at School
Learn your school’s safety protocols: where to stay during heavy rain, evacuation routes, and who to approach for help.
  4. Listen to Announcements
Stay updated with your school or local barangay advisories. Do not panic; follow the instructions from teachers and officials.

Stay Dry, Stay Safe
Avoid puddles and slippery walkways. Wet uniforms and shoes can cause discomfort and even illness. Change as soon as possible when you get home.
